Paint a distant country (which happens to have abundant resources) as a grave and imminent threat to our existence, ensure the American population that military action will be “quick and decisive,” proceed to invade and conquer, ensuring that the region becomes a basket-case open to exploitation; this, generally speaking, has been the recently preferred formula for US interventionism.
While the current administration is taking a different track with Iran, many are drumming up hysteria in an attempt to derail any kind of progress toward a diplomatic settlement which could prevent military conflict.
Unsurprisingly, the same people who were screaming about the imminent threat posed by Iraq are now doing the same with Iran: Facts be damned; just drum up fear and present diplomacy as a sort of cowardly act of capitulation.
